Public Guided Tour on September 20: Gardeners’ Jargon—What Do Botanical Names Tell Us?
Auf den "kugeligen" Blütenstand des Amarants spielt die wissenschaftliche Artbezeichnung ´globosa´in seinem Namen an.
Botanical plant names can sound complicated—and sometimes even flowery. In any case, they often conceal fascinating stories and clues about the plants they’re named after. During the upcoming Sunday tour on September 20, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., the Botanical Garden’s Technical Manager, Matthias Bartusch, will take a closer look at some interesting examples. Learn what species names like mirabilis, officinalis, repens, glauca, biloba, or globosa reveal about the plants’ appearance, origin, and characteristics, and join us in deciphering “gardener’s Latin.” You’ll have the opportunity to get to know plants from a whole new perspective.
The meeting point is at 2:00 p.m. at the main entrance on Stübelallee.
The tour is free of charge. Donations are welcome.
In the event of very bad weather or extreme heat, we will unfortunately have to cancel the event.
