BIM4all: Paths and Obstacles to Holistic openBIM
On September 15, 2026, the Institute of Construction Informatics welcomed the buildingSMART Regional Group Saxony to the Beyer-Bau. Under the title “BIM4all – Paths and Obstacles to Holistic openBIM,” approximately 26 participants discussed how to systematically break down barriers to the interdisciplinary use of Building Information Modeling (BIM).
Prof. Karsten Menzel (TU Dresden) kicked off the event with a presentation on an interdisciplinary BIM project in which students from various Departments collaborate to develop digital building models. The other presentations showcased various approaches to the end-to-end use of digital building data—ranging from demand planning and energy simulation to digital twins and AI-supported planning of building automation systems.
In addition, the construction informatics labs in the Beyer Building offered insights into practical applications: Guests were able to experience BIM models in the CAVE, learn about smart building technology and sensor systems, observe automation processes in the robotics lab, and find out about digital resource management.
The Beyer Building itself served as a consistent case study throughout the event. All presentations and demonstrations focused on the building, which was constructed in 1913 according to plans by architect Martin Dülfer and, following extensive renovation and modernization, was handed back to TU Dresden in October 2025. In this way, the historic building also became a practical example of the digital planning, use, and networking of building data.
