Interactions Between Biological Colonization and the Function of Streams
Grobmaterialreicher, silikatischer Mittelgebirgsbach im Vogtlandkreis.
We focus on applied stream ecology to gain an understanding of ecosystem processes. This also includes invasion biology. We conduct accompanying studies and evaluations of watercourse restoration measures, develop tailored management options, and perform water quality analyses.
Methods
- Development of (bio)monitoring concepts
- Acquisition and analysis of existing data / long-term data
- Water chemistry (nutrient analysis: P, N)
- Chlorophyll-a analyses
- POC measurement
- Taxonomic and functional diversity for assessing ecosystem functions in aquatic environments
- Habitat suitability modeling
- Comparative statistical analysis of monitoring data (e.g., BACI design: “Before-after-control-impact” / before-and-after comparison)
- Mapping of structural quality
- Mapping of micro- and mesohabitats
- Mapping of substrate quality
- Macrozoobenthos assessment according to PERLODES
- Fish fauna according to fiBS
- Macrophytes according to PHYLIB
- Short- and long-term field studies
- Laboratory experiments / experiments in flow channels / mesocosm experiments
- Stomach content analyses (microscopic and molecular biological), consumption estimates
- Molecular biological analyses of food resources
- Development, testing, and evaluation of labeling methods
- Study of inter- and intraspecific interactions
- Analysis of regional climate scenarios
- Scientific guidance for implementation measures
- Development of guidelines, recommendations for action, and species conservation strategies
- Environmental education and knowledge transfer
