What is the lecture about?
If fundamental difficulties in early arithmetic instruction are not overcome, this can have significantly negative consequences for the further development of mathematical competence as well as for the ability to act as responsible citizens in a democratic society. Teachers face (at least) two challenges: (1) Assessing students’ competencies efficiently and in a differentiated manner, and (2) selecting appropriate (!) learning formats to overcome the identified hurdles.
This presentation and discussion will introduce the development projects at the Karlsruhe University of Education (PH Karlsruhe) designed to support teachers in this regard. A digital tool for process-oriented assessment of relevant content will be examined, and specific cooperative learning and practice formats will be discussed that serve to build numerical and operational concepts while developing and expanding process-oriented competencies.
