Workshop: New Research on the Cistercian Order, Dresden, October 7, 2026
Bernhard of Clairvaux in the Antiphonary for the Abbess of Saint Marie de Beaupré; Walters Mss. 760
On October 7, 2026, the Research Center for Comparative History of Religious Orders will host a one-day workshop in Dresden. Early-career scholars from Dresden and Kiel will present their current research on the history of the Cistercians and discuss it with one another.
The program is divided into three thematic sections: The first section focuses on physicality and examines Cistercian fasting regulations and their implementation, as well as medical knowledge in collections of miracles from around 1200. The second section addresses networking and identity, using examples such as women’s monasteries, the attestation of documents in Saxon Cistercian monasteries, and the Legendary of Clairvaux. The third section focuses on the veneration of saints, with presentations on the Legendary of Cîteaux and the lives of Edmund of Abingdon.
