Ever since American soldiers arrived in France in 1917, “jazz” has set the beat in bars and nightspots—from the Casino de Paris to the Boeuf sur le Toit to the Folies-Bergère. But where does this jazz come from, and how American—or how African—is it? The lecture by music ethnologist Uli Wegner shed light on these questions.
