Exams in the Winter Semester 2026/27
Online registration for retake exams ( only in case of illness or failure of the module)
October 1–12, 2026
Online registration for regular exams
November 1, 2026, through January 25, 2027
This deadline also applies to almost all exams in sub-disciplines, supplementary areas, and departments from other faculties. Students will be informed separately of any exceptions.
There will be a separate registration period for IB degree programs.
Online registration for prerequisite exams in the BA degree program in Sociology (Curriculum 2016) and in the EB Sociology degree program will take place
from November 1 to 16, 2026
.
Based on our experience from previous semesters, we strongly urge you to complete your registrations as soon as possible after the registration period begins. As the deadline approaches, the number of inquiries increases, leading to longer processing times. There is often no time left for any necessary consultations with instructors or further clarifications. Additionally, any mistakes you discover when registering for courses—such as incorrect course selections—can no longer be corrected at that point.
Registration
Exam registration is typically done via Selma .
Here you will find instructions on how to use the program.
For students in ongoing degree programs and/or in very advanced semesters who have previously registered online via HISQIS, registration is now only possible by email to the Examination Office (see below). The students in question will receive a separate email from the Examination Office regarding this.
Online exam registrationis also no longeravailable for the profile area or supplementary area in master’s programs .
The registration process is explained on the following pages:
- Exam Registration for the Specialization Tracks in the Master’s Programs of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Science
- Exam registration in the supplementary area of the Master’s program in Linguistics, Literature and Cultural Studies
Exams for AQUA in the BA degree programs of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Science and the Faculty of Language, Literature, and Cultural Studies do not require advance registration. You can find more details here.
You can read the regulations for AQUA in the BA degree programs in Social Education, Social Work and Welfare Science here.
Withdrawal from Registered Exams Withdrawal from a Registered PL Without Providing a Reason
Exams that have not yet been taken can be canceled up to three business days before the scheduled date—without providing a reason. For more details, click here:
However, via selma/HISQIS, this is only possible if an exam date has been scheduled. For all other exams, there is a form on which the examiner must confirm the agreed-upon date.
Withdrawal Due to Illness
If you become ill before an exam, please send the completed form certifying your inability to take the exam immediately (i.e., without undue delay) in the original by mail to the Examination Office (Address: TU Dresden, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Academic Affairs Office, Examination Office, Helmholtzstraße 10, 01069 Dresden. Alternatively, you can drop the documents into the mailbox on the door of the Examination Office).
Please indicate in a cover letter whether you wish to withdraw from the PL for this semester altogether or whether you plan to make up the PL. If you plan to make it up, please also provide the date (e.g., of a new oral exam), provided it has already been set.
Deadline Extension for Written Assignments
Extension of the deadline for written assignmentsExtension of the deadline for written assignments
The deadline for submitting written assignments is no later than the end of the semester—that is, March 31 or September 30. Instructors may also set shorter deadlines. If an extension is necessary due to serious problems, prolonged absences due to illness, or similar circumstances, please speak with the instructor first. Through them, an extension of up to four weeks is possible. If possible, provide documentation confirming the circumstances that led to the need for an extension. You must notify the Examination Office of this extension if the deadline of March 31 or September 30 is exceeded. To do so, please submit the completed form , signed by the examiner, to the Examination Office.
If a four-week extension is not sufficient, a reasoned request for an exception must be submitted to the Examination Committee—again, accompanied by supporting documentation. The request should be informal and submitted through the Examination Office.
General Regulations for Registering for Exams
General Regulations for Registering for ExamsGeneral Regulations for Registering for Exams
- Register on time and provide all required information! “On time” means that registration must take place before the exam is administered. Exceptions are exams that took place before the registration period began. Prerequisite coursework, ungraded coursework, presentations, minutes, etc., must also be registered— not just written and oral exams. Always compare your registrations with the module descriptions.
- Register only for the exams you actually intend to take! An exam for which you registered but did not take will be graded a 5.0 and cannot always be retaken.
Do not register for an exam with an examiner other than the one you wish to be examined by! If that examiner is not listed in the course offerings, please check with them first. It’s possible that an exam was overlooked when the course offerings were posted. The examiners can then add these exams for online registration. - If an exam cannot be found in the regular online course offerings ( this also applies in particular to retake exams; see “Regulations for Retake Exams” below), because it is not being offered in the current semester or is not being offered by the desired examiner, you may register for this exam in writing after consulting with the examiner and receiving their confirmation that they are willing to administer the exam. To do so, use the form published on our website and have the examiner sign it (digitally). Please email a scanned copy of the form to the Examination Office. It is also possible for the examiner to email the form to the Examination Office and state their consent in the email.
- This form can also be used in exceptional cases where special arrangements are made to take exams that are not offered.
- Be sure to check that your registration is complete after you’ve finished . You must first register for the module, then the course, and finally the actual exam. Do not forget the last step—this is a common mistake!
If you encounter any difficulties during registration (e.g., exam not listed, system does not allow registration, etc.), please contact the Examination Office immediately!
Erasmus students cannot and do not need to register for exams online via HISQIS or Selma because they are not bound by specific examination regulations. You will receive certificates of achievement (“Scheine”) for the coursework you complete, which will be certified on the Transcript of Records by the faculty’s Erasmus coordinator at the end of your Erasmus stay.
Regulations for Retake Exams
Regulations for retake examsRegulations for retake exams
Students who have failed their first attempt at an exam in a module that allows for retakes due to insufficient performance may only retake the exam if the grade of 5.0 received resulted in a failure of the entire module. Retaking such an exam is also only possible once all grades for the module have been entered and if the module grade is lower than 4.0. The examination regulations do not permit retakes for the purpose of improving grades, with the exception of very rare special retakes (see examination regulations).
Students who have failed a module for the first time under the above regulation must retake all (!) failed exams within one year of completing the module. If the module is still not passed after taking all retake exams, a second retake exam may be taken. This, too, can (and must!) be registered for online. An application for an exception is no longer required. If no second retake exam is taken or if no such exam is available, the module is considered permanently failed. Studies in this subject cannot then be continued.
To retake written assignments (e.g., seminar papers, essays, etc.), you do not need to enroll in a new course if the examiner for your first attempt offers you the option to resubmit the assignment on a new topic (!) to her or him. The subject matter for such resubmissions is the “old” course material. You must register for such exams using the form.
Grade Entry
Grade Entry
Examiners enter their grades directly into selma/HISQIS. If grades for exams from past semesters are still missing, they are not yet available at the Examination Office either. If necessary, please check with the examiners yourself.
You can request official transcripts with a stamp and signature (for applications, etc.) by emailing the Examination Office.
