Until 2015, the SICK Prizes were donated by Dorothea Sick-Thies, the daughter of Dr. Erwin Sick (founder of SICK AG in Waldkirch), to honor outstanding work written at TU Dresden on the subject of environmental protection. Since 2017, the Gisela and Erwin Sick Foundation has donated the prizes. When awarding the SICK sponsorship prizes, particular emphasis is placed on progress for science and the relevance of the research results for practical measurement tasks - preferably in process, factory or logistics automation and in environmental protection.

Ms. Jie Zhang is one of the recipients of the 2023 Silicon Science Award. She is receiving the award for her outstanding bachelor’s thesis. This award was presented during the opening ceremony of the 60th Ilmenau Scientific Colloquium (https://www.tu-ilmenau.de/universitaet/fakultaeten/fakultaet-maschinenbau/veranstaltungen/ilmenau-scientific-colloquium-engineering-for-a-changing-world) on September 4, 2023, at the Technical University of Ilmenau.

Hans-Pundt Prize 2021
Mr. Jonathan E. W. Huffmann was awarded the 2020–2021 Hans-Pundt Prize by VDE Dresden for his outstanding master’s thesis titled “Canonical Correlations and the Calculation of Information Measures for Infinite-Dimensional Distributions.” This prize honors scientific, practice-oriented, and excellently executed diploma and master’s theses. The award was presented during the annual general meeting on June 15, 2022.

Hans-Pundt Prize 2020
The prize, awarded by the VDE Dresden Regional Association, went this year to Simon Röschner for his diploma thesis “Requirement-Based Adaptation of the Design of a Synchronous Reluctance Machine Without the Use of Field Calculation Methods,” Ricardo Herrmann for his thesis “Fault Location of High-Current Arc Faults in Low-Voltage Switchgear,” and to Clemens Matthias Bilsing for his thesis “Novel Laser Measurement System with Adaptive Image Correction Using Helical Wavefronts and a Deformable Mirror.” The prize is awarded as a special honor for scientific, practice-oriented, and excellently executed thesis projects and comes with a cash prize of 1,000 EUR.

Xin Xu won the Best Student Paper Prize at the Asia Pacific Microwave Conference 2020 for his paper “A 28 GHz and 38 GHz Dual-Band LNA Using Gain Peaking Technique for 5G Wireless Systems in 22 nm FD-SOI CMOS.”
Theodore Maiman Fellowship
Mr. Jakob Dremel has been awarded the Theodore Maiman Scholarship by the WLT (Scientific Society for Laser Technology). In 2020, the WLT is awarding three scholarships to students enrolled in a master’s or diploma degree program at a university in Germany who have distinguished themselves through exceptional academic achievement and whose current studies focus on photonic technologies. The exceptional achievements that set the scholarship recipients apart include a short duration of study, outstanding grades, and a very good bachelor’s thesis or term paper in a field of photonic technologies.

Mr. Benedikt Krug was awarded the 2018 Hans-Pundt Prize by VDE Dresden for his outstanding diploma thesis titled “Investigations into Brillouin elastography using a pulsed laser for biomedical applications.” This prize honors scientific, practice-oriented, and excellently executed diploma and master’s theses. The award was presented during the annual general meeting on June 15, 2022.

Arne-Hendrik Klaß received the 2019 Franz-Stolze Prize for his diploma thesis on “Ultrasound-Based Flow Imaging of a Hot Metal Melt Through a Multimode Waveguide.” The prize is awarded annually to honor outstanding theses in the field of energy engineering.

TU Dresden “Campus 2020” Ideas Competition
Students at TU Dresden were challenged to develop innovative and forward-looking concepts on the topic of “Access and Locking Systems.” The concept for “The CampusCard” ultimately won over the jury with its innovative solution for a flexible card featuring printed circuits, solar cells, and a touchscreen as the user interface.
The interdisciplinary winning team includes Sandra Klinitzke, Lukas Büschel, and Franz Schröder (from the departments of Business Administration and Economics and Media Computer Science), as well as Jens Abraham and Stefan Fraedrich from the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

2011 FRIEDRICH AND ELISABETH BOYSEN FOUNDATION AWARD
The award was presented to Dr.-Ing. Christian Knochenhauer was honored with this prize for his outstanding dissertation on the topic “Analog Frontends for Optical Communications up to 80 GBit/s,” which he wrote at the Chair of Circuit Design and Network Theory in the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
The non-profit Friedrich and Elisabeth Boysen Foundation promotes science and research in the field of environmental engineering. The foundation focuses in particular on engineering work aimed at reducing pollutants, noise, and energy consumption. For this reason, together with TU Dresden, it honors outstanding doctoral dissertations by young researchers at TU Dresden in the field of environmental engineering with this award.

The Friedrich List Prize is awarded annually by the "Friedrich List" Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences at TU Dresden for the best diploma thesis. In 2011, Dipl.-Ing. Martin Prussak (Mechatronics degree program) received this award for his thesis on the topic “Development of a Test Cycle Generator for Evaluating Hybrid Vehicle Concepts.”
BMBF Competition “What Makes Us Healthy?”
The Federal Ministry of Education and Research launched the “What Makes Us Healthy?” competition as part of the 2011 Year of Science—Research for Our Health and awarded prizes to 15 project ideas. Among the winning teams were students from the EuI Faculty at TU Dresden.
