FAQs
General information
SELMA: is the leading examination management system for all degree programs in Computer Science. Registration and admission via this portal is mandatory and a prerequisite for participation in every examination (including preliminary examinations)
IMPORTANT: Module registration is mandatory BEFORE exam registration. The examination performance is not visible without module registration!
Module and examination registration
- The prerequisite for exam registration is enrolment in the respective degree program and that the degree program has not yet been definitively failed.
- Examination registration is only possible if you have registered for the module. Module registration must take place BEFORE registration for the examination or preliminary examination. The examination (preliminary) performance is not visible without module registration! You must also have registered for the module before you can register for preliminary examination work.
For some modules, a course registration must be made in addition to the module registration, as otherwise an examination registration is not possible. - It is not possible to complete the examination WITHOUT passing the PVL. A
will be communicated to the student AND the examiner as a system message.
system message.
The student will be removed from the list of participants in the examination.
This process is recorded in selma / CN.
It is also mandatory to register for the (preliminary) examination in selma.
If there is not yet a passed preliminary examination (PVL) in the system, registration for the
registration for the examination is only possible "under reserve". - Exam registrations in SELMA (> under Exams > Register | Deregister - as a reminder
reminder, here is the link for Selma https://selma.tu-dresden.de/) are only possible during the specified registration periods (1-4).
The examination registration periods are published semester by semester on the Examination Office website under Examination Registration Periods . - You can deregister for examinations online via SELMA without giving reasons. The corresponding deregistration deadlines can also be found on the Examination Office website under "Examinations" and " Examination deregistration/withdrawal". Once the deregistration deadline has passed, it is no longer possible to deregister via the system. The binding examination registration remains valid.
Where can I find what?
You can find click aids for using SELMA (e.g. module and exam registration) in the SELMA usage instructions.
When is a repeat examination possible
It is possible to retake a failed examination at the next possible examination date - a module status is created immediately with an assessment.
| Prerequisite for the awarding of credit points | Credit points are earned if the module examination is passed. The module examination consists of a written examination lasting 90 minutes. |
It is only possible to repeat the failed examination if the second examination has also been passed AND the module status shows a 5.0 (failed).
| Prerequisite for the awarding of credit points | Credit points are earned if the module examination is passed. The module examination consists of a written examination lasting 90 minutes and a written examination lasting 120 minutes. |
Registration problems
If technical problems occur during online registration or if it is not possible to register for an examination, please contact the Examination Office for Computer Science within the respective registration period with a full-page screenshot of the screen via ticket using the contact form for students.
Viewing examination results
- Where can I see my examination results - in selma -> under Examinations -> Results
- What do I need to know?
- You can view your examination results in SELMA in 3 ways, namely as:
"Exam results", "Semester results" and "Study results
- In "Exam results" you can see the published exams that you have completed as part of your active studies. The exams are sorted chronologically according to the
examination date.
- In "Semester results" you can see the published results that you have achieved or recognized in a
semester or have been recognized. In the selection list
"Semester" you select the semester for which you want to view the results.
results.
- In "Study results" you can see the results of all the coursework you have completed during your studies.
The modules are displayed according to your examination regulations. You can expand the individual sections and elective areas. You can also see here whether a section from the examination regulations has been completed.
In the study results, results from module offers and independent courses as well as results of recognized achievements from Germany and abroad are displayed. The results are only displayed once at least one attempt has been published.
Explanation of the module examination
A module examination usually consists of several examinations. Only when the module examination has been taken and the module grade is less than sufficient (4.0) is it determined whether the module examination has been failed and must therefore be repeated. Passing and
Passing and retaking generally refer to the module examination and not to the individual examinations.
Deadlines for repeating a module examination
A failed module examination must be repeated once within one year. A second resit examination can only be taken at the next possible examination date. After this, the module examination is deemed to have been definitively failed. A further repeat examination is not permitted. Exception: "free attempt regulation", see respective examination regulations
If a failed module examination consists of several examinations, only the examination that was assessed as failed (5.0) can be repeated. The passed examination remains valid.
Do all module examinations have to be passed?
No. The module examination is generally passed if the (possibly weighted) average of the associated examinations is at least "sufficient" (4.0). Information on weighting can be found in the module descriptions.
Can examinations graded "unsatisfactory" (5.0) or "failed" be repeated before the module examination is completed?
No. Examinations are only taken as part of the module examinations. It is only possible to take the examination again when repeating the module examination. All examinations in a module must always be taken before individual failed examinations can be retaken.
For modules in which the examinations extend over several semesters, this can mean that it is only in a later semester that it is decided whether an examination can be repeated or not. Only after the module grade has been calculated is it clear whether the module as a whole has been failed.
What is a free attempt?
If a module examination is taken before the semester specified in the curriculum, it is considered a free attempt. A module examination not passed in a free attempt is deemed not to have been taken. A module examination passed in a free attempt can be repeated once at the next regular examination date to improve the grade. The better grade then counts.
Please note: If you miss the next regular examination date, it is no longer possible to improve your grade.
Exam Registration—When, Where, and How
Exam registration is only possible via SELMA during the respective exam registration periods. During these registration periods, only those exams assigned to the respective registration periods (e.g., early exams) are available for registration in SELMA.
The exam registration periods are published each semester on the website of the Examination Office for Computer Science under “Exams.”
- Important Notes:
- You can only register for an exam via SELMA if you are enrolled in the respective degree program.
- You must register for modules before registering for exams; otherwise, exam registration will not be possible.
- If the exam registration deadline has been missed, late registration is not permitted unless there are reasons for which the student is responsible.
- SELMA is the only official exam registration portal. If you have not registered for an exam via SELMA, you are not authorized to take the exam. You may not take the exam.
Exam Withdrawal / Withdrawal from an Exam
Generally, you may withdraw from a written exam (written test) up to three business days in advance without providing a reason, and from oral exams at any time without providing a reason.
Example: A written exam is scheduled for Monday, and you wish to withdraw from it. In this case, you must submit your withdrawal from the exam by 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday of the previous week. Withdrawal must be done online via SELMA.
Please note the withdrawal deadlines for individual exams at .
Withdrawal from an exam is no longer possible after the withdrawal deadline has passed. Your binding exam registration remains in effect.
Withdrawal deadlines for other exams are published in the respective exam schedules or on the Examination Office’s website.
Withdrawal from an Exam Due to Illness
If you withdraw from an exam due to illness, you must use the form for certifying inability to take the exam and the application for withdrawal due to illness
Note:
- The duration of illness confirmed by a physician must match the duration of illness specified in the application for withdrawal due to illness.
- If any information is missing—e.g., the doctor’s signature or stamp, or precise details of the duration of illness (from/to, including dates)—the application cannot be processed, and the application or form will be rejected as invalid.
- The original medical certificates must be submitted no later than 5 business days after the exam date and may be delivered in person, sent by mail, or deposited in one of the TUD’s official mailboxes or deadline drop boxes. Documents submitted via email will not be processed.
As a general rule, withdrawal due to illnessmust be claimed *before* the exam. Withdrawal notices that are received by the Examination Committee after the exam date—without the student having taken the exam—and that are based on reasons that may have already existed prior to the exam date cannot, as a rule, be accepted. By taking an exam, you are generally declaring that you are fit to take the exam, and you cannot subsequently cite health issues as a reason for withdrawal.
Retaking Exams
First, it is important to distinguish whether the exam is part of a module with multiple exams or one with only a single exam!
- For a module that concludes with a single exam, if you fail the exam, that attempt at the module exam is graded as “failed” and must be retaken.
- For a module with multiple examinations (e.g., the math modules INF-[B|D]-110 and INF-[B|D]-120), all required examinations in the module must first be completed. The module grade is then calculated. If this module grade is 4.1 or lower, this attempt at the module exam is considered a failure. When retaking the module, only the assessment components that were not passed in the previous attempt may be retaken. Assessment components that have already been passed cannot be retaken .
Please note: It is not permitted to retake a module exam that has already been passed.
Failure of a module exam will be officially notified (i.e., an official notice will be sent to the address you have on file in SELMA). This notification will include, among other things, information on the deadlines for retaking the exam. Further details are governed by the currently valid study and examination regulations!
What is a waiver?
- With a waiver, any student may declare in writing to the Examination Office that they are waiving the requirement to take an exam.
- The waiver is valid for any exam attempt, including retakes.
- The waiver may be submitted at any time, regardless of exam registration periods or currently available exam offerings.
The date of the application is considered the exam date!
- You can find the form for the waiver under “Exam Forms” on the Examination Office’s website. The waiver must generally be submitted in original form (printed and signed) by mail or in person at the Computer Science Examination Office. Submission via email is not legally permitted.
Exam Results
Your exam results are published on a per-student basis in the selma student portal.
Please contact the examiners if results from previous semesters are missing or if there are any discrepancies.
Access to Exam Materials
Within one year of the completion of the respective examination process, you may submit an informal request to the respective examiner to review your written exam papers, including the related evaluations and examination records.
To view your papers, you can schedule an individual appointment with the examiner. Some chairs/institutes offer a central appointment time during the semester for written exams and schedule individual appointments only in exceptional cases.
You have the option of applying for compensation for disadvantages due to a disability or chronic illness when taking examinations.
You can also apply for compensation for the care of your own children up to the age of 14 or the care of your close relatives.
You can submit an informal application for compensation for disadvantages in writing, stating the reasons for the proposed compensation for disadvantages and submit it to the Examination Office in good time with suitable evidence. The Examination Committee will decide on the application at its own discretion.
Suitable measures to compensate for disadvantages in examinations and preliminary examinations may include, for example, extended processing times, processing breaks or the use of other media.
Further information as well as advice and support services can be found here: Studying with disabilities
To apply for a
- Grade overview/performance overview in German and/or English
On request, grade transcripts/performance overviews can be stored in SELMA without notarization (signature or digital signature). If certified grade overviews are required, these are usually sent digitally signed via ticket.
If an original signature and stamp of the Examination Office for Computer Science is required, the grade overview/performance overview can be picked up during the office hours of the Examination Office for Computer Science.
- a certificate of achievement (80% certificate)
Requested transcripts of records (80% certificate) are usually sent digitally signed via ticket. If an original signature and stamp of the Examination Office for Computer Science is required, the certificate of achievement can be picked up during the office hours of the Examination Office for Computer Science.
- a certificate of completion of studies
A certificate of completion of studies (provisional certificate) is generally sent digitally signed by ticket after successful completion of studies with a final overview of grades in German and English. The submission of the application for the issuance of the certificate documents is mandatory for the issuance of the graduation documents.
If no certificate application has been submitted to the Examination Office for Computer Science within 14 days of graduation, the final documents will be issued ex officio, so that there is no longer any entitlement to subsequent claims (e.g. designation of the semester of study).
- a declaration of no objection
Declarations of no objection must always be issued in the original and can be requested during the office hours of the Examination Office for Computer Science.
Please send a ticket using the contact form for students, stating your name, degree program and matr. no. (mandatory!) to the Examination Office Computer Science.
If, for example, you need the degree certificate in English, TU Dresden offers its students the currently free service of translating TU documents through the Teaching Center Languages and Cultures.
You can find more information here!
Applying for additional modules
Please note: Additional modules can only be applied for at the beginning of each semester while you are still studying.
If you have already completed your studies, even if you are still enrolled in the respective degree program until the end of the semester, it is no longer possible to apply for and take additional modules!
To apply for additional modules, please send a ticket to the Examination Office for Computer Science using the contact form for students with the subject "Application for additional module".
Attach the relevant module description to your ticket as a PDF attachment (only applies to additional modules outside the Computer Science degree programs).
The e-mail must also contain the following information
- Current degree program (to be determined via ticket), matriculation number (mandatory), name of examiners, name of course (for catalog modules, such as INF-B-510).
The additional module is set up in SELMA by the Examination Office. Independent module registration for additional modules is not possible in SELMA.
Once the additional module has been set up by the Examination Office, it should be possible to register for examinations independently in SELMA.
If you have any problems or questions in this regard, please contact your Examination Office.

Like any other course requirement, you must register your thesis (bachelor’s, master’s, or diploma thesis). Registration via SELMA is not possible. Registration must be done exclusively using the form.
In some degree programs, you will not be admitted to the thesis until you have met specific prerequisites. This includes, for example, earning a certain number of credit points.
Admission Requirements for Starting the Thesis
- Bachelor’s degree programs (BPO 2009):
According to § 26 of the current examination regulations, there are no formal prerequisites for the bachelor’s thesis. However, in accordance with the study plan, it is advisable to begin the bachelor’s thesis only after completing the core courses.
The bachelor’s thesis must have received a grade of at least “satisfactory” (4.0) prior to the defense. - Master’s in Computer Science (MPO 2010):
Before beginning the master’s thesis, students must have completed the module exams for the selected profile modules and passed them with a grade of at least “satisfactory” (4.0).
The master’s thesis must have received a grade of at least “satisfactory” (4.0) prior to the defense. - Master’s in Media Computer Science:
There are no additional admission requirements for beginning the master’s thesis.
The master’s thesis must have been graded at least “satisfactory” (4.0) prior to the defense. - Master’s Program in Computational Modeling and Simulation (CMS):
There are no additional admission requirements for beginning the master’s thesis.
The Master’s thesis must have received a grade of at least “satisfactory” (4.0) prior to the defense. - Master’s Program in Distributed Systems Engineering (DSE): Admission requirement pursuant to § 26 (2) MPO: “The topic of the master’s thesis may be assigned once the student has earned 80 credit points. Commencing the master’s thesis also requires the completion of the module from the general qualification area.”
- Diploma in Computer Science (DPO 2010):
The admission requirement for beginning the diploma thesis is the completion of the profile modules.
Before defending the diploma thesis, 284 credit points must have been earned. This means that, for the defense—which earns one credit point—the advanced module worth 15 credit points, for example, may still be missing.
Before the defense, the diploma thesis must have been graded at least “satisfactory” (4.0).
The 29 credit points for the thesis are already earned once the thesis has been graded at least “satisfactory” (4.0) and thus count toward the required 284 credit points.
Thesis Topic
Thesis topics are assigned by the chairs themselves. As a rule, you must contact the respective chair or the advisor for your desired topic directly.
- Note: The topic/title of the thesis is binding and must not differ between the time of registration and the submission of the thesis. Likewise, the language in which the thesis is to be written, as specified at the time of registration, is binding. The examiners may not be changed either.
The Examination Committee decides on the approval and assignment of the topic/title and appoints the examiners.
The topic/title will be officially assigned to you by the Examination Committee through the Examination Office. The deadline period for completing the thesis begins when the topic/title is assigned.
Ex Officio Assignment of Topic/Title
Have you passed all the module exams required for your degree, fulfilled all other prerequisites necessary for graduation, and do you only need to complete your thesis (possibly with a colloquium or defense)? In that case, after a deadline specified in your examination regulations, a topic or title will be assigned to you “ex officio” by the Examination Committee. Newer examination regulations stipulate that the Examination Committee must assign the topic/title during the semester following the semester in which the last module exam required for graduation was passed.
- Recommendation: Discuss a topic with potential advisors or examiners well in advance, based on your interests, and register your thesis in a timely manner.
Topic Return
After the topic for your thesis has been assigned, you may return it within a deadline specified by the examination regulations.
You may return a topic only once. For example, if you have already used your one opportunity to return the topic during your first attempt at the thesis, you may not return the topic assigned when you retake the thesis.
Registration for the Thesis
Students must register for their thesis themselves by submitting the registration form. You can find the corresponding form on the Examination Office’s website under the “Forms / Examination Forms” page .
When filling out the form, please note the following:
- Personal information
- Title of the thesis in German and English
Note: If the thesis is written in English, this must be indicated when registering the
thesis and clearly indicated on the form
- The form must be signed and approved by two examiners (one of whom must be a faculty member from the Faculty of Computer Science) authorized to evaluate the thesis.
Submission of the Application for Registration of the Thesis
The registration form must be submitted exclusively as an original (printed and signed) to the Computer Science Examination Office by mail or in person.
- Note: The processing time—from the date the registration form is submitted, through the assignment of the topic/title by the Examination Committee (signed by the Chairperson of the Examination Committee), processing in SELMA, and notification of the assigned timeframe via email, can take up to 14 business days.
Extension of the Processing Period
The processing time for the thesis may be extended upon request.
Typically, this is due to illness, for which a verifiable medical certificate is required. To request an extension, please submit the Form for Certification of Inability to Take Exams and the Application for an Extension of the Thesis Completion Period Due to Illness without delay.
- Note: Both forms (Form for Certification of Inability to Take Exams and Application for an Extension Due to Illness) must be submitted together in original form (printed and signed) to the Computer Science Examination Office.
Documents submitted via the ticket system will not be processed. - Please note: Here, too , the documents must be submitted immediately (within a maximum of 5 business days from the start of the illness).
However, there may also be academic reasons that necessitate an extension of the thesis completion period. The Examination Committee decides on the validity of the reasons and thus on the extension of the thesis completion period.
You can find the application to extend the completion deadline for the thesis on the Examination Office’s website under the “Forms / Examination Forms” page .
- Note: You must submit the application to extend the completion period no later than 3 weeks before the submission deadline, exclusively as an original (printed and signed), either by mail or in person at the Computer Science Examination Office.
Requests for an extension of the thesis completion deadline submitted at the last minute cannot be considered. In such cases, the original submission deadline remains in effect (as determined by the Examination Board).
It is entirely possible that requests for an extension may be rejected by the Examination Committee. In this case as well, the original submission deadline applies.
Submission of the Thesis
In accordance with the applicable examination regulations, two typewritten and bound copies (print version) as well as a digital text version on a suitable data storage medium (CD or USB drive) must be submitted.
However, the Faculty of Computer Science offers two options (depending on the degree program) for submitting the thesis. Please consult with your advisors to decide whether you will submit your thesis in accordance with Option 1 or Option 2. To ensure timely submission, you must choose only one option (depending on your degree program).
Submission of the thesis for the following degree programs:
Bachelor’s in Computer Science/Media Computer Science (BPO 2009), Master’s in Computer Science/Media Computer Science (MPO 2010), Diploma in Computer Science (DPO 2010), Master’s in DSE
1. Submission of bound copies (print):
- The thesis must be submitted in duplicate to the Computer Science Examination Office by the deadline. If submitting in person, it is recommended that you schedule an appointment in advance.
Note: The Declaration of Originality must be included in the thesis and signed in the original!
- If the Examination Office is unstaffed, or on Sundays and holidays, the thesis may be deposited in the deadline mailbox (white mailbox in the passageway between the Tillich Building and the Hülsse Building, Helmholtzstraße 10) to meet the deadline.
Note: Further information about the deadline mailbox can be found on the Central Mail Office’s website . - It is also possible to mail the thesis. Please note that only the receipt stamp from the Central Mail Office at TU Dresden is valid for meeting the deadline.
Both copies of the thesis are forwarded exclusively by the Examination Office and only to the primary advisors.
2. Digital Submission:
As of April 1, 2025, submitting the thesis via email or ticket will no longer be permitted.
Below are the individual steps for the digital submission of the thesis:
− For each thesis, the Examination Office creates a folder in Datashare
− The student receives temporary permission to upload files to this folder (write-only; cannot edit, share, delete, or download).
− If the completion period is extended, this permission will be extended
− The student can upload files but cannot overwrite them
− This ensures that submitted files (regardless of the deadline) can no longer be overwritten
| Important: The first upload is the one that counts for official purposes and is forwarded to the examiners. All subsequent uploads will be removed by the Examination Office ex officio! |
| Important: Please make sure that you do not upload files to your own Datashare. It is recommended that you check whether you are logged into your own Datashare before uploading. Log out first before following the link assigned by the Examination Office for the digital submission of your thesis. |
− Datashare notifies the Examination Office of the upload via an email to the ticket system
− Students must also notify the Examination Office via ticket that the thesis has been submitted on time
- Note: The declaration of originality must be included in the thesis and signed (print it out, sign the original, and insert a scanned copy into the thesis).
Digitally signed declarations of originality (even with a certified signature) are not legally valid.
- Note: The submission deadline is binding even for electronic submissions.
For the thesis to be considered submitted on time, it must be uploaded to Datashare by 11:59 p.m. on the submission date. If the upload of the thesis is not completed until 12:00 a.m. or 12:01 a.m., the thesis is considered not submitted on time and is therefore graded as a fail (5.0). - Please notify the Computer Science Examination Office via the ticket system under the “Theses” queue about your digital submission of the thesis so that a timely deadline check and forwarding of your thesis to your examiners/advisors can be ensured.
- Note: If technical problems occur while uploading your thesis to Datashare and this puts meeting the deadline at risk, please notify the Computer Science Examination Office immediately.
Submission of the Thesis for the CMS Master’s Program:
- In accordance with the applicable Study and Examination Regulations and pursuant to the Faculty Council resolution of March 18, 2025, only printed copies of the thesis may be submitted for the CMS Master’s program.
- For the procedure, see: Submission of Bound Copies
- An additional digital submission of the thesis alongside the printed version is possible at any time (for the procedure, see: Submission in Digital Form)
- Note: The thesis must be submitted in both print and digital formats by the deadline. Late submission in digital format is not permitted!
Colloquium / Defense
In most degree programs, a colloquium or defense is required as a separate component of the thesis examination (see regulations in the respective examination regulations). The academic prerequisite for admission is a grade of at least “satisfactory” (4.0) on the thesis. In this case, you do not need to register for the colloquium or defense.
Retaking Theses
The deadlines for retaking theses are specified in the applicable examination regulations. As a rule, theses that receive a grade lower than “satisfactory” (4.0) may be retaken within one year. A second retake is scheduled for the next available date.
Applying for BAföG
Applications for BAföG are made via the Studentenwerk.
Form 05
All students who receive BAföG are funded for four semesters without a performance review. From the 5th semester onwards, educational support is only provided if students can prove that the credit points (completed modules) specified by the Examination Committee have been achieved after the 3rd FS or 4th FS.
Proof shall be deemed to have been submitted at the end of the previous semester if it is submitted within the first four months of the following semester and it is clear from the proof that the work specified therein was already completed in the previous semester.
Proof must be provided using form 05 in accordance with § 48 BAföG.
A preliminary examination must be carried out by the Examination Office, so that Form 05 must always be submitted in the original (in person or by post) to the Examination Office for Computer Science for examination / confirmation.
In individual cases, students are requested by the Student Services Office to provide proof of achievements for a specific semester using Form 05. In this case, the notice of request from the Studentenwerk is required for further processing. A copy of this must be submitted together with Form 05.
Documents submitted by ticket will not be considered.
Required achievements:
If you have acquired at least 80% of the possible credit points to be acquired according to the regular study schedule in your semester (LPmax), you will receive confirmation that you have completed the "usual" achievements (see table below). This is to take into account the fact that, particularly in the case of modules that extend over several semesters, the credit points are only acquired when the corresponding module examination is passed at the end of the respective module.
