ACE-BIO - Advancing Sustainable Ethyl Acetate from Bio-Based Feedstock
The ACE-BIO project, led by the TUD Dresden University of Technology—in collaboration with University College Dublin and Aberystwyth University—is accelerating the development of a circular bioeconomy. Previously unused waste streams from the dairy industry (whey permeate) and pressed juice from perennial grasses are converted into bio-based ethyl acetate using the yeast Kluyveromyces marxianus —a versatile “green” solvent, which is currently produced primarily from petrochemicals.
The project is being carried out in collaboration with Aberystwyth University (Dr. David Bryant; Institute of Biological, Environmental & Rural Sciences (IBERS)) and University College Dublin (Prof. Nick Holden; School of Biosystems and Food Engineering).
