LIFE ARIADNE—Establishing a Circular Economy for Carbon Fibers
As part of the EU “LIFE ARIADNE” project, we are working together with our project partners from Denmark, France, Italy, and Germany to establish a circular economy for carbon fibers. By developing an upcycling process, we are transforming carbon fiber waste into high-performance yarns for thermoset applications and testing them in motorsports and bicycle components as examples of yarns with high capabilities and wide-ranging use.
The goal of the project is to prevent the downcycling and landfilling of composite waste. Instead, the aim is to create a supply chain for high-performance yarns made from recycled carbon fibers. These high-performance yarns enable a reduction in the use of energy-intensive carbon fibers made from virgin materials while continuing to leverage their tensile strength potential, thereby also reducing negative environmental impacts such asCO2 emissions.
Together with our project partners, we are pursuing a holistic approach. This ranges from the processing and recycling of carbon fiber waste to the development of suitable high-performance fiber structures and their conversion into components with enhanced capabilities. We at ITM are contributing our many years of experience in the development of high-performance fiber structures made from recycled carbon fibers to the project.
We look forward to sharing our experience and insights with you. Together, we want to explore the potential of recycled carbon fibers and the resulting textile solutions for a more sustainable future.
