What Students Say
Content and Structure of the Program
The program is based on the licensing regulations for physicians and is divided into three sections: In the first (preclinical) section, students learn the fundamentals of the natural sciences and medicine. It lasts 4 semesters and concludes with the first part of the medical licensing exam (Physikum). Additional admission requirements include first-aid training and a three-month nursing internship. The second (clinical) phase of the program spans 6 semesters (including four-month clinical rotations) and concludes with the second part of the medical licensing exam. The practical year is the final year of study. It covers the specialties of surgery, internal medicine, and general medicine, or a clinical elective. Upon passing the third part of the medical licensing exam, the medical degree program is completed after 6 years and 3 months.

What are your options after graduation?
Successful completion of a medical degree is typically followed by residency training. In any case, graduates have a wide range of opportunities to pursue their careers in private practice or as employees, for example, in hospitals operated by various organizations, in public health services, in Occupational Health Services, at universities, and in research institutions. The following alumni profiles provide a closer look at two career paths.
Doctors with Heart, Mind, and Courage
Even as medical students, Marie Downar and Oxana Atmann questioned the status quo and dared to try new things. Together with the nationwide nonprofit association “Medizin und Menschlichkeit” (Medicine and Humanity), they organized the “Future: Medicine” symposium in Dresden. Read the alumni profile
Forensic Medicine Is Different from What You See on TV
Until high school, Katrin Metzler wanted to become a veterinarian. Then her interest shifted toward human medicine. But before the now 32-year-old could become a doctor, she completed training as a registered nurse. Today, she is one of the few female forensic pathologists in Germany. To the alumni profile
