Thursday, 4. DS (1 p.m.) weekly, room CHE/089/H
Friday, 2. DS (9.20 a.m.) weekly (alternating lecture and seminar/excercise), room CHE/184
Start date: Thursday, October 15, 2026, 4. DS (1:00 p.m.)
Note: The maximum number of participants in module Chem-Ma-C04 is limited to 40 persons!
Exam:
This lecture (3 SWS) + seminar/excercise (1 SWS) for Master students (Chemistry Master) and PhD students is also eligible for students of other faculties, e.g., from the School of Science.
Important notice for students not enrolled in the Master course (e.g., PhD students, others) needing a certificate of attendance:
If you need a certificate of attendance for this lecture, it is your duty to contact me at the beginnning of the semester (ideally in the first lecture) and inform me about your attendance!
This lecture teaches the fundamantal principles of NMR spectroscopy as well as its applications for molecular structure determination in chemistry, materials and life sciences.
Main topics:
- "classical" vector model, Bloch equations and relaxation
- product operator formalism
- RF pulses and pulse sequences
- 1D and 2D Fourier transform NMR spectroscopy
- magnetic interactions (chemical shift, J coupling, magnetic dipole-dipole interaction, electric quadrupole interaction)
- nuclear Overhauser effect (NOE)
- molecular structure determination especially by liquid-state NMR spectroscopy
- basic principles of solid-state NMR spectroscopy
